The scripture exhorts wives to submit unto their own husbands and sometimes that is where the emphasis of the word ends. Let’s have a scripture look at what the Bible says,
“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22
I often hear “wives if you submit…”
- your husband can lead
- your home will be happier
- you will be happy
and on and on go the enchanting promises of submission.
The truth is by my sinful nature I am not submissive.
Even when I have submitted something happens that alters my submissive desire. Something that reminds to be self-preserving, selfish.
As Unto the Lord
I have also heard, “I will submit if my husband is worthy.”
Again this is an emphasis on man rather than the God of man.
What I see in Ephesians 5:22 is a woman being exhorted to be submissive to her own husband as unto the Lord.
Not because her husband is doing his part. Rather she is submissive because of her relationship with her beloved Christ.
My friend, man focuses on “doing” to get results.
Our Lord shows us that we always fall short of God’s glory.
Dear sister in Christ, you cannot submit to your husband if you do not have a submissive relationship with your beloved Lord.
The way you submit to Jesus Christ is the way you will submit to your husband.
Love of Christ
Allow Jesus’ love to be your focus. And realize it is HE and what HE had done, and is doing is what compels you to submit for His glory.
Submission becomes a reality, an opportunity for God’s grace to work in the life of your husband.
The Lord is the one who loves you more than anyone, more than your husband. It is that love that permeates your life as His child.
“And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” Ephesians 3:9
Wives of LWHseries
In Love’s Weaving Hand series there are women who submit but not till in all reality they battled their own insecurities.
Submission requires a woman to trust an imperfect man. My dear sister in Christ, if you know yourself that can be really scary. But our Lord grants a blessing when you are willing to have faith in God who is ever faithful.
“Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.” 1 Peter 3:6
Submission is scary.
As a wife or even a single woman, your submission begins with the greatest man that ever lived JESUS CHRIST.
Allow yourself to have a viable relationship with Him.
Be willing to submit, even when it is scary.
Then as your trust grows with your Lord and Savior allow him to guide in your submission to your husband when the time comes.

Another verse says it this way,
“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.” Colossians 3:18
I really do believe that submission has been misunderstood to think it makes you weak and helpless. But the opposite is true and the enemy knows it.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7
Submission is needful in order for you to be willing to follow, to obey your Lord.
When you submit to your husband you afford him the opportunity to serve you as Christ served the Church.
Your submission is a privilege for him.
What challenges or experiences have you had with submission?
